Poetry Ireland: Irish-American Partnership workshops
Poetry Ireland Writers in Schools Scheme and the Island / Oileán programme. I had a lovely visit to Taobhoige National School for this project. The theme was Emigration & the Diaspora. I asked the 28 in the classroom if they knew anyone who was living away from Donegal. They all knew someone close to them. They each filled out a figure with names of who they knew, where they were living, if they knew why they were away and if they thought they would be home again. It was quite poignant to read out what they had written – brothers, sisters, fathers, godparents.. A couple were in Dublin but the rest were in London, Australia, Azerbaijan, Equador …. The students all said that they hope to live in Donegal when they grow up.
With thanks to the students, Mary Blake teacher, Poetry Ireland and Ambassador Anne Anderson
